The world of translation can be a confusing place, especially if you’re the one doing the buying. Many purchasers of translation services feel the same way as they do when they take their car to the mechanic. How do you really know what’s going on underneath the hood? After all, if you don’t speak the language into which you’re having something translated, how can you measure quality? This is why we give our customers the reassurance that you will get the quality you required by using industry standard and well proven methods for translation quality tracking.

LISA an industry standard translation QA model which we use to structure the feedback given by reviewers on the quality of translations. This model is based on the LISA QA metric from the Localization Industry Standards Association. The feedback categories and severities defined in the model are made available to reviewers in the Reviewer Grading window on the Translation screen.

We use LISA QA to continually check and validate our translators and translation process. In the LISA QA metric, errors are categorized as Minor, Major or Critical. For example if a segment contains one minor and one major mistranslation, you would enter 1 in the Minor column and 1 in the Major column for DOC Language – Mistranslation. The pass or fail status of the check is for information only. A failed task can be submitted to the next stage as usual.

Ensuring Good Translations – Right From The Start

Our focus is not on translation quality control (checking for mistakes) but rather, on quality improvement (producing a better translation from the start). Would you like to drive a car off the lot and then have to return it a week later due to manufacturer’s defects? Or, would you prefer to have a great car from the very start? There are many ways to ensure a good translation from the beginning, but chief among them are the following:

  • Providing the translators and editors with the necessary resources so that they can understand as much context as possible to uncover the true goal of the communication.
  • Translation teams who are armed with glossaries, style guides, support materials, and contextual information can produce a translation of much higher quality than those who are just handed a text with no background.

Technical Solutions

Most of our larger projects are completed inside our cloud-based Translation Workbench, the workbench surfaces glossaries, reserved words and context inside one editing screen ensuring the highest quality of translation. The workbench also allows real-time collaboration and communication with project managers so questions can be asked and answered very quickly.

Why is Certification important?

Straker Translations is certified to ISO 17100 and has been comprehensively audited and certified by the leading global verification and certification company VNZ, who have confirmed that we comply on all aspects of the standard.  A big part of the certification process is ensuring you have fully documented all of the required policies and also written procedures for each policy. Writing what you do and doing what you write is a big part of the certification and having completed this process we know that we provided the highest quality translation service for our clients.

ISO9001 and EN15038 Certification – What Is It and Why Is It Important To Us?

ISO 9001 is one of the standards within the ISO 9000 family of quality management systems standards. The standards to help organizations operate with industry best practices and ensure that they meet the needs of customers and other stakeholders. Issues are identified and recorded early to give us the information we need to make these issues opportunities for continual improvement. ISO 9001 certification is suitable for all sizes and types of organizations and is well established around the world as an invaluable Quality Management System standard.

Why do we have two levels of certification?

Achieving certification of both ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 17100 requires complete bi-annual internal audits to ensure that we are adhering to the standards set out and we are also independently audited each year. In addition to this, we run quarterly QMS (Quality Management Standard) Meetings.

ISO 17100  is a quality standard developed especially for translation service providers. The standard ensures the consistent quality of the service. It requires regular audits by the certification body, and if any discrepancy is found, the certification shall be revoked. Many European Translation companies have long felt the need for a reliable method of demonstrating the quality of the services they provide to their customers.

However, as the ISO 9001 standard does not address the sort of translation-specific processes, which many translators consider important in determining quality outcomes, this standard did not become widely accepted as a “guarantee of quality” in the industry. In 2006, a quality standard, specifically written for the translation industry,ISO 17100 , was published by CEN, the European Committee for Standardization.

This was a serious attempt to provide certification of translation – specific quality management using independent, on-site audits by recognized certification bodies. This standard has gained acceptance worldwide and the European Union has begun including it as a benchmark in its tender specifications.
